Medical Imaging Object Store

Overview

S3-based object storage for medical imaging studies (X-rays, CT scans, MRIs) in DICOM format, integrated with PACS for long-term archival.

Storage Architecture

  • DICOM Images: Medical images in DICOM format with metadata
  • Long-term Archive: 10-year retention for regulatory compliance
  • Encrypted: Server-side encryption with KMS
  • Lifecycle Policies: Automated tiering to Glacier for cost optimization

Access Patterns

  • Imaging Service: Write DICOM images from modalities, read for radiologist viewing
  • PACS Integration: Read/Write for image archival and retrieval
  • EHR Service: Metadata linking to imaging studies
📸 DICOM Standard

All images stored in DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) format, the international standard for medical imaging.

Compliance & Retention

  • HIPAA Compliant: PHI in DICOM metadata
  • Retention: 10 years per medical imaging regulations
  • Immutable: Object Lock enabled for legal compliance
  • Audit Logging: S3 access logs retained for 7 years
